Seasonal rules and closures, by date

Wildlife closures repeat every year on the same dates. This list updates itself: dates drop off once they pass.

    Dog rules in the valley

    Leashes in Steamboat

In any city park, a dog must be on a handheld leash no longer than 6 feet unless it's in an off-leash zone. Dogs must be leashed on city trails too, including the Core Trail, Spring Creek and Emerald Mountain.

    Source 1 · Source 2

    Voice and sight control

Off-leash means your dog comes the first time you call. The city says a dog that bothers people, wildlife, livestock or other dogs, or wanders into a leash-only area, isn't under control.

    Source

    Off-leash hours

At all five city off-leash sites, off-leash hours run from 1 hour after sunrise to 1 hour before sunset. The box at the top of this page shows today's times.

    Source

    Licenses

The City of Steamboat Springs says every animal in Routt County must be licensed each year at the animal shelter. Bring the paper rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter. In Hayden, licenses are $10 for spayed or neutered dogs and $15 for others, sold at the police department, 249 Hawthorne St.; bring current vaccination records. Hayden licenses run June 1 to May 31.

Hayden has a new leash law

Hayden's Town Council approved a leash law, Ordinance 752, and the town announced Oct. 30 that it's in effect. Dogs must be leashed and under control on streets, alleys, sidewalks, parks and other town property, except at the town's designated off-leash dog park or where town signs allow it.

    Bring your own bags

Pick up after your dog everywhere. Steamboat Digs Dogs, a local dog-owner group, says the city doesn't provide bag dispensers or bags, so the group buys them, about $20,000 worth a year.

    Source

    Restaurants and patios

The Steamboat Chamber notes that Colorado law keeps dogs out of places that serve food, so plan on patio seating. Taprooms without kitchens are the easiest place to bring a dog inside.

    Source

    Problems and lost dogs

Report an animal problem, such as a loose or aggressive dog or nonstop barking, to Steamboat police dispatch at (970) 879-1144. For a lost or found animal, call the shelter at (970) 879-7247.

    Wildlife and hunting season

Elk winter range closes several national forest trails from Dec. 1 to April 15 (see the calendar). Hunting season is on: the Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach state parks recommend keeping dogs leashed for their own safety.

If your dog meets a skunk

Steamboat Veterinary Hospital posts this home wash: 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. Leave it on 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse. Mix it fresh and never store it: the hospital warns it can explode.

    How we built this guide

We checked each listing on Nov. 3, 2026 against its official source: the City of Steamboat Springs, the Town of Hayden, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Steamboat Resort, or the business's own website. Where a business doesn't post its dog policy, we used its Steamboat Chamber listing and say so. Each listing's source line names the page and the date we checked it. We didn't use news reports, review sites or paid listings. Off-leash hours are worked out from sunrise and sunset in Steamboat each day, following the city's rule. We're a secondary source: rules, hours and prices can change without notice, so check before you go. If you spot something out of date, email anna@yvindy.com. Please leash up around wildlife and pick up after your dog.
